Reduction of environmental impact of slag heaps from granite quarries exploitation

Objective

The scheme proposes to bring together the distinct phases yet to be developed, with the aim of bringing to light all the potential usages of inert waste products generated in all granite works (quarries), with particular regard to their being used as : decorative stone in fields such as ceramics, in glass and resin based agglomerates as an additional prime material, and in other fileds such as building, the construction of motorways and small dams, as a main dry material.

To this end the main tasks to be investigated are :

a) Selection of granite types which according to their composition and texture, could be used as prime materials in glass and ceramics and/or building once treated or processed by a rigourously tested method.
b) Analysis, identification and grading of the granite selected.
c) Identification of the chemical, thermic, mechanical and/or purification processes, capable of producing materials suitable for use in a production line.
d) Technological evaluation of the granites investigated by means of the preparation and grading of new compounds.
e) Evaluation of reliability and constancy of properties of the products made with the selected granites.
f) Evaluation of commercial viability of the products obtained.

The development of this programme will permit in the case of there being positive results, the resolution in part of one of the problems of granite quarrying; the effect that the slag has on the environment.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
