Objective
The object of the project is a laser system for application in odonthoiatry, specifically dedicated to the treatment of caries.
The system, that can be interfaced with PC, printer and monitor, is made up of :
- Laser source, operating in the wavelength range of 1 - 3 micron, type Nd : YAG or Er : YAG.
- Fibre optic beam delivery system, ending with special handles suitable to easily reach any point of the oral cavity.
- Power supply, for pulsed emission, condenser charge type.
- Driver & Control unit, that controls all the main parameters of the System, like tooth temperature, intensity and frequency of the pulses.
The main advantage of the System proposed is that it is a non-contact, purely thermically based technique, that avoids a physical contact of a mechanical object with the tooth, aiming at the elimination of the traumatic and painful effect of the tools presently used. Another very important property of the laser beam in the caries treatment is its cauterizing and coagulating effect.
