Objective
The tufting process is a complex interaction of needles, grippers (loopers) and knives. The wear of the tools results in lower quality levels, a high amount of waste and long machine downtimes, which lead to high costs on account of the high productivity of the machines. At present only metal tools are being used in this area. Ceramic cutting tips have proven their resistance to wear in other application fields. So the major objective of the research work is to ascertain the possible lifetime potential of ceramic tufting tools and to define the conditions for the integration of the ceramic component into the tufting system.
The wear of the cutting edges will be investigated. The test configurations based on the experience of th industrial partners. Information about cutting forces and conditions will be collected by parallel investigations. These data will be used to design the ceramic component. The durability of the cutting tip will be tested by a special "proof test". The results will be safeguarded by running a laboratory tufting machine. The assigned field tests with completed tufting modules under a practice-oriented environment will give the necessary facts for fianl evaluation. Especially the results concerning the quality of cut will be find in this step.
