Development of evacuated super insulation panels with a tenfold increase of performance

Objective

The main results of this research project are
- An evacuated insulation panel having a tenfold increase of performance is built and tested. The thermal conductivity for the central section of a panel is 2.5 E-3 Wm{-1}K{-1}, measured at a mean temperature of 41.9 C. At room temperature this value will even be lower. Thermal conductivity of current insulation foams are 26E-3Wm{-1}K{-1}. An improvement of at least ten times is achieved. Likewise the thickness of the insulation panel can be ten times less.
- A 100% recyclable insulation panel (filling and envelope).
- A lifetime of more than 50 years (depending on application) without degradation of properties like thermal conductivity and vacuum tightness of the envelope is achieved for a metal - metal connection.
- A lifetime of ten years can be achieved with epoxy adhesives if an internal gas pressure of 10 mbar was to be allowed. This high allowable gas pressure is only possible using powder-fiber mixtures. The thermal conductivity then, however, would be relatively high 5-7E-3Wm{-1}K{-1}.
- A tempering apparatus to pre-treat filler material is designed and built by SASKIA, ZAE and LEVEL.
- A closing method for panels in a vacuum environment is developed and tested. Hermetic panels are made.
- Square panels having perpendicular edges without protruding flaps are made.
The industrial sectors which are likely to use the results of this project are producers of insulation material, cold stores, producers of furnaces and the deliverers of the panel components like glass or metal plates, thin foils and the powder filling.
The insulation panel can be applied in cold stores, potentially saving energy by a average amount of 2500 kWh yearly per cold store (wall area = 36m{2}) compared to a cold store insulated with polyurethane. A high temperature application is insulating batteries in electrical cars.
The feasibility of solar space heating has been shown unlikely without seasonal storage. Evacuated insulation panels allow for individual seasonal solar heat storages, increasing the yearly solar gain for heating a low energy building by an amount of 9 GJ or 30 MECU for all new houses in Europe.
