Objective
In deep-drawing, the friction conditions have a strong effect on the quality of the produced components as well as on the reliability of production and on tool life. In particular when deep-drawing nonferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, titanium and their alloys as well as coated sheet metal, conventional tools exhibit a tendency for cold welding which reduces the quality of the products as well as the life of the very expensive tools. Furthermore adhesion of workpiece material on the tools requires interruptions of the production for cleaning the tools by grinding. For avoiding this, in many cases drawing foils are used as lubricants as well as extremely viscose lubricants which are difficult to remove. The proposed project is aimed at the optimisation and application of an advanced multilayer coating system for tools for deep-drawing of nonferrous metals. The project includes
- optimisation of the coating process with respect to the composition, structure and thickness of the deposited layer; model experiments and loboratory tests by deepdrawing for evaluating the tribological behaviour of the entire system tool-workpiece;
- scaling-up of the coating process in an industrial coating company; - extended industrial applications of coated tools in production by deep- drawing in industrial companies.
It is expected that the results of the project will enable a reduction of friction and adhesion resulting in a reduced work requirement for forming of sheet metal, in particular of nonferreous metals and also in an improvement of product quality. Furthermore the reliability of production will be improved and the life of the tools will both be increased and become predictable. Finally, by reducing the consumption of lubricants, the production is also improved with respect to the environment. All these effects will relust into an essential improvement of the competitiveness of European industry.
