Non-destructive real-time control of the quality of electrical spot welding

Objective

The objective of the project is to develop a non destructive method for the quality of spolt welding. Spolt welding is a rapid and econornical assembling process spreadly used to joint pieces on metal sheets or metal sheets between themselves. Millions of welds are produced everyday in various industry fields.
Nowadays, quality control of these welds can be carried out only thanks to destructive method.
The recent development of listening and acoustic analysis methods in the frequence range higher than audible range enables numerous industrial applications in the fields of testing and monitoring. This is true when material or structure emit by themselves mechanical vibrations: leak Detection, bearing testing, electrical isolation, etc...
The aim of the project is the exploitation of Acoustic Emission generated by spolt welds during the welding process, so in real time, in order to caracterize the quality of each spolt weld.
Finally, this project will enable the future development and usage of intelligent welding machines adapting the process paramaters from the characterization of each spolt weld quality and reliability.
