Objective
The target oF this project is the development of the worldwide first competitive production process tor the industrial extrusion and manufacture of completely biodeqradable and flexible packinq material based on starch. Completely biodegradable and flexible packing materials are not available at present on the international market. Plastics like PE, PP or partly PE containig a small amount of starch are mostly used and are not biodegrodable. The production of this plastics is a conventional manufacturing process. The disadvantaqes of plastic packing materials are the problems of the disposal of waste, the increasing costs for the plastic refuse and the environmental pollution. In comparison to these well-known plastic problems this development project offers biodegradable and ecoloqically friendly bioplastics based on starch with a lot of advantages e.g. utilizition of agricultura'l raw material, reuse and natural recycling by composting or as animol feed. Because of the totally different properties of the raw material starch in comparison to conventional plastics a new process technology, extrusion and manufacturing process has to be developed for these bioplastics. BIOTEC research company has already production know-how in starch foam products which are able to substitute plastics like polystyren. The omount of substitution from flexible plastics is estimated by BMl at approx. 700.000 t/a, that means a volume of 2.000.000 t/a in Europe.
