HEAT PIPE SYSTEM ON MILK SPRAY DRYERS

Objective

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the use of a heat pipe heat recovery system to recover heat from a milk dryer exhaust. The recovered heat is used to pre-heat the incoming supply air to the dryer, with consequent energy savings.
The heat recovery system is designed to recover approx. 920 KW, at dryer rated output of 3 Tonnes/hr. Based on dryer running time of 4,500 hours/year, this is equivalent to an annual saving of 430 TOE/yr. A payback period of approx. 7 years is expected.
The unit actually exceeded the design heat recovery of 20-22 %. But the unit itself was frought with cleaning problems. Milk Powder is a very sticky substance and as such it caused a lot of fouling on the unit, both on the Q dot pipes and on the ducts. Due to the construction of the unit, C.I.P. solutions containig detergents could not be used due to corrosion problems. This increased the cleaning problems. A number of efforts were made in the intervening years to improve the cleaning, e.g. in excess of L10,000 was spent in 1984, in installing flaps on the inlet duct work. Even after this spend, the unit still was not properly cleanable. The unit itself after six years of operations, was also getting into bad repair due to its very exposed position on top of the drying plant roof.
Based on the above information, a decision was taken to remove the unit due to its unhygienic state and the associated risks of having an unhygienic piece of plant in a food factory.
The exhaust air stack of a large spray dryer has been fitted with a low pressure drop, washable, aluminium, Q-DOT heat pipe heat exchanger. This heat exchanger transfers heat from the hot contaminated exhaust air to the cool clean supply air. The pre-heated supply air is then routed to the oil fired air heater before being fed to the dryer chamber. The result of pre-heating the air is a reduction in the fuel consumed by the air heater to maintain the air at the specified drying temperature.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
