Objective
80 dwellings in existing apartment buildings in Metz (Moselle), and in Paris are internally insulated with pre-fabricated panels. Combination of helio & parieto-dynamic concepts allows a reduction of heat losses through facades, pre-heating of fresh air and improvement of ventilation. Average savings are expected to reach 0.17 TOE/dwelling/year (10% of previous consumption).
Project started in December 1986. The setting-up of the pre-fabricated panels was finished and their installation was monitored during the winter 88/89 in CERNAY (30 dwellings) and in VIEUX-CHARMONT (20 dwellings). The completion date (initially October 89) had to be postponed to mid 1991 to allow two heating periods of monitoring.
A new site (PETITE HOLLANDE) was proposed. The monitoring, limited in winter 88/89, at VIEUX-CHARMONT was unsatisfactory.
1. The traditional method of retrofitting the building envelope with external insulation is efficient but can be expensive, uneasy to work, does not prevent thermal bridges on window frames and does not solve ventilation problems.
2. The device to be demonstrated allows cancellation of heat losses due to thermal bridges and recovery of heat losses through the facade. It combines :
- an internal insulation around the window by means of a standard bay panel (185 cm x 175 cm) including a carefull treatment of thermal bridges in the window frame.
- a parieto-dynamic ventilation : the fresh air entering into the facade is pre-heated by circulating into small ducts (20 mm x 30 mm) incorporated in the panel, and then circulated into the room. 3. The panel itself is made with :
- a 70 mm-thick insulating material incorporating air ducts
- a vapour barrier
- a 13 mm-thick cardboard-plaster.
4. Various designs provide for different types of windows and incorporate when necessary a room forthe radiator. In the latter case, a reflecting foil is added behind the radiator.
5. An optional design (not included in the project) allows for an additional window. Such an alternative would reduce significantly heat losses and increase heat recovery on exhaust air.
