ENERGY SAVING POLLUTION CONTROL FOR STENTER MACHINES

Objective

To demonstrate the effectiveness of novel air cleaning equipment in the removal of atmospheric pollutants given off by all types of Stenter machine, whilst at the same time recovering a minimum 50 % of the energy used in their operation.
The objectives of the project have been successfully achieved, in that the expected levels of energy recovery and pollutant removal have been attained.
Detailed figures from the independent monitoring organisations will be available in the final report, but the Contractor's own tests show energy recovery levels in excess of 55%, whilst pollutant removal efficiencies are better than 95 % for both hydrocarbons and particulate.
Apart from the delays arising from a late decision by the Host company to require heat recovery in the form of hot water, rather than hot return air for the fourth Stenter, which involved a new chimney stack and external ductwork, the only technical problem which arose concerned the two-bay Pegg Whiteley machine.
It is most unusual to find a two-bay Stenter machine used for pad dyeing and setting, and the carryover of dyestuff and water vapour from this machine was such as to soften and shorten the life of the high efficiency particulate arrest filter medium used with the dry system. This problem was resolved by replacing the dry system with a patented, re-circulatory wet scrubbing machine, designed by the Contractors, which would be available in the unlikely event that similar problems arise in the future.
Despite the over-run of the project in both time and money terms, the system can now be seen to be successful in both technical and economic areas, with a pay back period, including filter replacement, of less than two years.
Two, new types of air cleaning equipment have been installed and are in operation at Burlington Fabrics (Holdings) Ltd., where four Stenter machines are processing 80 - 100 tonnes of fabric each week. A patented, wet scrubbing system is now in operation on the two-bay Pegg Whiteley machine, which is used exclusively for pad dyeing and setting, whilst a new high, temperature dry air filtration system is employed on the four and five bay Proctor and Krantz machines. All the machines now exhaust through air to water heat exchangers, which provide all the hot water needed for the extensive dyehouse facilities.
Energy recovery is such that the pay back period will be less than two years.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
