NEW DREDGING METHOD FOR MAINTENANCE DREDGING

Objective

To demonstrate that water injection technology can allow a specific energy saving of 1 kWh/m3 silt compared to conventional dredging methods, or 172 TOE/year/dredger for an annual dredging of 2 million m3 of silt. Payback time is estimated at 2 years.
The third tests carried out depending of the place and the maximum spoil transport distance. Results are energy savings between 1,3 to 3,4 kWh/m3.
System proved before mentioned energy savings, but is sensitive to parameters of work site.
The principle of this new dredging method consists of desintegrating silt which settles on the bottom of harbours by injecting water into the silt layer. Density currents of silt containing water are then generated and directed to deeper outside the harbours. The transport of the spoil takes place in a natural way which makes it possible to dredge continuously with two water injection device. This could be operated by 1 or 2 persons, instead of 2 to 4 men (trailing suction hopper dredge) or 4 to 8 people (bucket dredge).
During the demonstration, a new dredge-boat will be built and tested in different harbours. The efficient operation of the new dredging technology would be assessed by the measurement and the evaluation of various parameters : energy consumption, water injection pressure and flow, density currents velocity, turbidity...
Preliminary estimations have shown that the water injection dredge consumes 0.2 kWh/m3 silt, the average between bucket and trailer hopper - dredgers being 1.2 kWh/m3 silt. It is assumed that the dredger will deal with 2 000 000 m3 silt/year.
Investment cost is estimated at 2.1 million HFL. The exploitation of the new dredger would generate a saving of 500 000 HFL/year for energy costs and of 600 000 HFL/year for operating costs. This would lead to a payback time of 2 years.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
