CONCERTED ACTION "WAKE EFFECTS"

Objective

A method has been developed to determine the velocity reduction in the far wake of obstacles in the atmospheric boundary layer. Compared to the near wake, this far wake is the most important with regard to wind turbine siting, as close vicinity to obstacles will mostly be avoided because of the expected hazardous turbulence effects of the approach wind on the wind loading of the wind turbine and the reduction of its power output.
WITHIN THE WIND ENERGY PART OF THE CEC R&D PROGRAMME ON NON-NUCLEAR ENERGY SOURCES, A NUMBER OF PROJECTS DEALING WITH WIND TURBINE WAKES AND OBSTACLE WAKES HAS BEEN BROUGHT TOGETHER IN A "CONCERTED ACTION". THE DIVISION OF TECHNOLOGY FOR SOCIETY OF TNO (MT-TNO, THE NETHERLANDS) HAS BEEN ASKED TO COORDINATE THIS CONCERTED ACTION ON "WAKE EFFECTS". MAIN CONTRACTORS ARE : DANISH MARITIME INSTITUTE (DMI, DENMARK), UNIVERSIDAD POLITECNICA DE MADRID (UPM, SPAIN), STATE UNIVERSITY OF ANTWERP (RUCA, BELGIUM), CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD (CEGB, UK), RISOE NATIONAL LABORATORY (RISO, DENMARK) AND MT-TNO.
THE PROJECTS INVOLVED ARE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF COMPUTER MODELS FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE TOTAL POWER PRODUCTION OF WIND FARMS; ONE PROJECT IS AIMED AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MANUAL CONTAINING GUIDELINES AND CALCULATION METHODS TO BE USED FOR SITING OF WIND TURBINES NEAR BUILDINGS AND OBSTACLES. THE ACTIVITIES WILL RESULT IN A FURTHER DEVELOPMENT AND EXTENSION OF THE EXISTING WIND FARM MODELS, BASED ON MORE ADVANCED TURBULENCE DESCRIPTION.
MOREOVER, IN THESE MODELS ADDITIONAL MODULES WILL BE INCORPORATED CONCERNING THE SPECIFIC FEATURES OF SITING A WIND FARM IN TOPOGRAPHICALLY COMPLEX TERRAIN AND CONNECTION TO A WEAK POWER GRID.
AN IMPORTANT TOPIC IN THE CONCERTED ACTION IS THE VALIDATION OF THE MODELS WITH DATA FINALLY BECOMING AVAILABLE FROM SEVERAL WIND FARMS IN EUROPE; MEASUREMENTS CAMPAIGNS IN THE TAENDPIPE WIND FARM (DENMARK), THE ZEEBRUGGE WIND FARM (BELGIUM) AND THE NIBE WIND TURBINES ARE PART OF THE CONCERTED ACTION.
COORDINATION ACTIVITIES CONSIST OF THE ORGANIZATION AND REPORTING OF TECHNICAL PROGRESS MEETINGS AND THE PRESENTATION OF A SUMMARY REPORT OF OVERALL RESULTS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
