Summary:
The key aspect of the ARCHANGEL project was to develop a method which would automatically find common points on maps and images in any type of arena and which had the capacity to identify areas where change has occurred. The object was to develop a prototype system, to provide the eventual user with a robust and flexible system which should allow further development and analysis of the associated algorithms, techniques and methodology.
The project has successfully achieved its primary scientific objectives. A prototype system for automatic registration of images derived from space borne sensors, with each other and with vector data has been developed and tested against realistic end user requirements. Algorithms have been developed for each of the processes involved in the prototype and for the detection of change in the registered image. The system has the potential to provide the facility for application scientists to detect change of a particular type specified by them using a range of data sources. The established system and the expertise gained is now ready to be further developed and new processes produced.
