Objective
TO EVALUATE THE EXISTING DATA ON THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE RHINE AND RHONE WATERSHEDS IN ORDER TO ASSESS HUMAN IMPACT ON THESE SYSTEMS
THE RHINE AND THE RHONE ARE TWO RIVERS VERY SIMILAR IN THEIR GEOLOGICAL, HYDROLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS. THE CHEMISTRY OF THE WATER AND THE SUSPENDED MATTER WAS ORIGINALLY IDENTICAL IN THE TWO RIVER SYSTEMS. THE IMPACT OF CIVILISATION, HOWEVER, HAS BEEN QUITE DIFFERENT. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A DETAILED CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION OF BOTH RIVER SYSTEMS WILL BE HELPFUL TO UNDERSTAND AND REDUCE PRESENT DAY POLLUTION.
THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH WILL BE DONE:
- CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE EXISTING DATA ON THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE RHINE AND RHONE WATERSHEDS (INCLUDING LAKES AND DELTAS);
- ASSESSMENT OF THE PRISTINE CONDITIONS AND DESCRIPTION OF THE MAJOR CHANGES IN WATER CHEMISTRY THAT HAVE OCCURRED;
- DESCRIPTION AND EXPLANATION OF DIFFERENCES IN SOIL MONERALOGY IN THE TWO DELTAS;
- OBTAINMENT OF QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE DATA ON THE SEDIMENTS AND SUSPENDED MATTER IN THE RIVER RHONE;

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
