Objectif TO EVALUATE THE EXISTING DATA ON THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE RHINE AND RHONE WATERSHEDS IN ORDER TO ASSESS HUMAN IMPACT ON THESE SYSTEMS THE RHINE AND THE RHONE ARE TWO RIVERS VERY SIMILAR IN THEIR GEOLOGICAL, HYDROLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS. THE CHEMISTRY OF THE WATER AND THE SUSPENDED MATTER WAS ORIGINALLY IDENTICAL IN THE TWO RIVER SYSTEMS. THE IMPACT OF CIVILISATION, HOWEVER, HAS BEEN QUITE DIFFERENT. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A DETAILED CHEMICAL DESCRIPTION OF BOTH RIVER SYSTEMS WILL BE HELPFUL TO UNDERSTAND AND REDUCE PRESENT DAY POLLUTION.
