The psychological and social determinants of environmental attitudes and behaviours : international comparison

Objective

To analyze the determinants (attitudes, values, personality, knowledge) of individual behaviour relating to environmental issues and in particular the cultural differences that underlie environmental attitudes and behaviour.

The research consists of the following :

i) Pre-survey - carried out in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and United Kingdom, with the intent of drawing up well defined interview guidelines, including theidentification of main environmental attitudes and environmental actions. Various methods are used in this pre-survey. These include the "triangulation" which is a part of Kelly's Repertory Grid, critical incidents method, questions on time budget, reactions to photographs used as stimuli;

ii) After pre-survey - in each country, information is gathered on individual knowledge, values and attitudes relating to specific environmental issues that are of similar importance to all the countries involved.

iii) Survey - a common core survey guide is devised and an homogeneous sample interviewed in each country. The guide integrates into the survey protocol, scales concerning individual aspects relevant in previous research e.g. a "locus of control" scale, an altruism scale, a self description of personal and social identity and a scale of values;

iv) The interview - deals with ways of life, level of concern about the environment, representation of environmental problems and knowledge acquired on environmental issues as well as data on the subject's usual actions towards the environment;

v) Data Analysis - data is analyzed according to a commonly devised content analysis protocol.
