Objective The main objective in this project is the study of therepercussion of climatic changes on extreme precipitation. The project will include assessment of climatological tendenciesin extreme values of precipitation, modelling at regional andlocal scales of the spatio-temporal distribution of rainfall ratein the area, determination of empirical relationship betweenraindrop size distribution and instantaneous rainfall rate forintense convective precipitation, application of raindrop sizedistribution modelling to improve the rainfall rate determinationfrom weather radar, development of convective raincell model forthe Western Mediterranean Area, and application of models ofglobal warming to research into the relation betweenprecipitation and runoff. The first step of this project consists in modelling the spatialand temporal distribution of instantaneous rainfall rate observedin the area. In addition, a classification of the rainfallevents in Barcelona according to the type of raindrop sizedistribution will be carried out. For this purpose an adequatedisdrometer will be used. This instrument measures the diameterand terminal velocity of raindrops by means of the attenuation ofa narrow infrared beam.In order to classify the differentevents of convective precipitation in the Western MediterraneanArea, a C-band weather radar and a mesoscale raingauge networkwill be used. The probable maximum precipitation (PMP) fordifferent areas will be determined from maximum rainfall ratedata observed using a statistical and deterministic method. Inorder to assess the effect of a global warming in thehydrological cycle, the study of temperature, precipitation andrunoff data applied to a river basin (the Llobregat's river) willbe undertaken.
