Exploitable results

Results of experimental and modelling research have been obtained on changes in physiological processes at the plant and crop level, and in the carbon fluxes in a cropped soil, to assess the changes that might occur when the projected changes in climatic conditions become effective. The current uncertainties in the resulting overall effects on growth and carbon economy of crop plants, and plants in more complex vegetations like pastures, are evaluated. The combination of research on aboveground carbon fixation and underground carbon storage and release has generated data which helps to estimate the overall effect of climate change on crop and pasture productivity and on the dynamics of carbon pools in the studied systems. Preliminary results of research on winter cereals and grasses in the CROPCHANGE project in the framework EU-ENVIRONMENT programme combined with earlier work of the groups involved have been combined and discussed. Emphasis is put on such aspects as photosynthesis at the leaf and canopy level, winter hardiness and vernalization of grasses, regrowth after defoliation, tillering, grain filling and yield formation. This is linked with the soil biomass activity and carbon dynamics in the vegetated soil. Many points of interaction and formal cooperation of participants with National and large International programmes (IGBP-GCTE, IGBP-BAHC, EU-COST 619) have been developed.
