Reduction of chromium discharge from the leather industry

Objective

To minimize the chromium concentration in the effluent from the leather industry.

The project will be divided into several subsectors:

1) Higher chrome uptake during the tanning process - the objective in this phase is to investigate the influence of a pretreatment with aldehydes or aldehyde releasing agents in order to increase the chromium uptake during the chrome tanning.

2) Improvement of the recirculation and possible re-use of chromium from the tanning liquor (high fixation) - the research will be concentrated on the effluents from high-fixation chrome tanning due to the special problems compared to conventional chrome tanning.

3) Reduction of chromium from the wet aftertreatments - the preventive measures to be carried out in order to minimize the chromium discharge from these treatments will be investigated. These are factors during the process like selection of syntans, dyestuffs and so on. Furthermore pH and temperature are important parameters to be investigated.

4) Chromium replacement - this phase will be investigated using combinations of primarily aluminium and Mimosa. Parameters that will be investigated are the concentrations of the tanning agents, temperature, pH, reaction time and on what stages the addition of the tanning agents will take place.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
