Arctic stratosphere studies using ALOMAR

Objective

The three partners associated in this project are involved in the construction of ALOMAR (Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere) at Andoya (69°N, 160°E) in Northern Norway. The present contract concerns the implementation and the exploitation, during and after the Phase III of SESAME campaign, of the ALOMAR Stratosphere Lidar (Rayleigh/Mie/Raman/Doppler core lidar of ALOMAR) as well as the analysis of the interpretation of the data.

For a better understanding of the role of the PSCs in the ozone depletion, it is necessary to know the conditions of their formation. During the sequences of operation, ALOMAR will allow a continuous monitoring of the profiles of temperature and aerosols backscattering at 3 wavelengths (355, 532 and 1064 nm) and 2 polarizations at 532 nm. It will be possible to observe in real-time the formation and the disparition of PSCs and to correlate these events with the evolution of the temperature. The measurement of the depolarization ratio will help to distinguish between the different types of PSCs.

The tasks in ALOMAR may be divided in 4 categories:

1. Process studies: The conditions of formation and evaporation of PSCs (temperature gravity waves) and the characterization of the different types of PSCs will be investigated.

2. Participation to SESAME, Phase III: The ALOMAR Stratosphere Lidar will contribute to campaigns held in Northern Scandinavia to study the polar ozone and especially the Phase III of SESAME in winter 1994-95. It will allow the detection of PSCs and simultaneous measurement of the temperature in the lower stratosphere in real-time and help to plan operations during this campaign (launch of balloons or flight of airplanes when PSCs are present). It will participate to the network of ground-based measurements in Northern Scandinavia which will include lidars, DOAS and FTIR instruments.

3. Climatological studies: We will start to establish the climatology of the measured parameters in the lower arctic stratosphere (temperature aerosols and PSCs).

4. Validation of satellite measurements: The ALOMAR capability to obtain high accuracy measurements of temperature and aerosols characteristics with an absolute calibration will allow to use it as an excellent ground-truth instrument for satellite remote sensors.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
