Objective
Develop an integrated aerosol measurement system ARIAS for simultaneous in-situ and near range remote sensing aerosol measurements in the stratosphere. Implement the system on high altitude research platforms (such as Perseus or Geophysika or stratospheric balloons). Perform experiments during the SESAME and APE (Airborne Polar Experiment, with the stratospheric research aircraft Geophysika) field projects in the arctic winter season 1994/95 at altitudes up to 20 km, both inside and outside of the polar vortex.
The scientific tasks of the project are to:
1. measure in-situ particle size distributions;
2. determine the thermodynamical phase of the particles;
3. obtain the optical particle refractive index;
4. measure the particle shapes (especially in cirrus and PSC type I and II clouds);
5. measure the distribution of particles in space (especially the structure of leewave-induced PSCs);
6. derive total particulate surface for studies of heterogeneous chemistry;
7. compute optical extinction due to the aerosol and other optical data relevant for the data reduction of the LIDAR operated by both participants on the platform;
8. study in detail the physics underlying the scattering of light by aerosol particles by application of Mie theory;
9. use a microphysical box model together with the stratospheric data.
ARIAS is an integrated instrument to two components:
1. Laser Scatterometer - for remote sensing measurements in the near range of the airborne platform (i.e. several hundred meters around Perseus, Geophysika or stratospheric balloon).
2. Optical Particle Counter - for in-situ analyses of individually sampled aerosol particles.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
