Objective
To develop simple tools for preventive environmental management in small enterprises using existing technical, financial and managerial systems and practices. The intention is to write a handbook for preventive environmental management aimed at small enterprises.
The project is divided into three parts :
i) identification of simple tools wich facilitate the utilisation by small enterprises of the existing information on preventive environmental management and storage of the technical knowledge in a standardised and readily accessible form. A systematic comparison determines which tools are best for small industries ; the drafted tools are then tested on product systems with wich the partecipants have experience;
ii) in the second part a more extensive testing of the selected tools is carried out, with the aim of providing a detailed description to be used in a handbook. Model system are set up and the objective is to identify a number of environmental improvement possibilities for each model based on existing databases and literature and cleaner technologies as well as the knowledge of the project partecipants. The experience gained in the texts is to be described in detail to show the extent to which the technical, financial and managerial information found in small industries can be integrated and used for preventive environmental management;
iii) the environmental management and assessment tools are modified and integrated into an environmental management handbook for small enterprises with the aim of guiding the user from a broad overview of the product system to the more detailed quantification and impact assessments of the individual processes of inputs and outputs.
