EXPRES : Extended Producer Responsibility for Complex Products a research analysis of the socio-economic and technical implications of devising and implementing a policy on this principle

Ziel

To characterise the feasibility of the introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) at European Union, national and local levels.

The research consists of the following:

i) a cross-disciplinary analysis of the development of the concept of EPR as a strategy aimed at reducing the total environmental load from a product, by connecting a responsibility to the manufacturer for the entire life-cycle of the product and especially its reclamation, re-cycling and final disposal;

ii) a number of inter-related case studies are developed on the implementation of EPR for complex durable products, such as automobiles, electronic equipment, household electrical appliances and furniture. The concept and models of relevant regulatory/steering instruments are evaluated from the point of view of technical feasibility, their social and cultural acceptability, their economic implications, their implications for environmental management systems at production level and of the expanded concept of environment which manufacturers and disposers have to confront.

The research assesses the effectiveness of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as a means of helping to transform economies within the European Union along environmentally sustainable lines.
