Genomic tools for bio-monitoring of pollutant coastal impact

Objectif

We shall expose two sentinel fish species to a variety of toxic environmental pollutants, and by genomic and proteomic gene expression profiling, determine adaptive responses and adverse health effects, thereby enabling selection of diagnostic biomarker gene products. Two tools will be developed for assessing the health status of coastal and estuarine environments, benefiting dependent communities and permit sustainable industrial development with maximum natural resource protection:
(1) fully flexible DNA mini arrays for practically diagnosing adverse health effects and specific chemical toxicants in environments where the identities of the toxic contaminants is unknown and continually changing and,
(2) quantitative analytical methods for specific gene products, for temporal trend determination. Their utility will be validated by analysis of fish from a number of polluted environments and inter-comparison with currently available methods.
