BIOMARKERS OF EXPOSURE AND EFFECT IN RELATION TO QUALITY OF LIFE AND HUMAN RISK ASSESSMENT

Objective

The objectives of this project are to develop biomarker approaches to provide information on beneficial and deleterious dietary combinations in relation to human health. In order to achieve this objective it is necessary to :

- determine which biomarker approaches are presently being used throughout
Europe;
- decide what are the major health related issues and endpoints which must be
considered;
- consider the relative merits of approaches based upon biomarkers of exposure
and of biological effect;
- delineate the interplay of deleterious and beneficial dietary components;
- carry out co-operative trials where possible to prioritise and assess the area;
- to identify and prioritise research areas in the field of biomarkers which are
suitable for future shared cost research.

Clearly biomarkers have a role in the interpretation of the interaction between diet and health and this proposal seeks to determine the most efficient and relevant biomarkers which relate to human health and to define the pace and direction of future studies. This information will be of benefit both to consumers throughout the Community in terms of individual dietary advice and to regulators concerned with deciding policy relating to human diet and health.

Biomarker studies are clearly multidisciplinary in nature and transnational in their ultimate effect. A coherent approach can only arise therefore by considering the special requirements of individual regions arising from unique social factors and agricultural history while developing a European approach which is widely applicable and comparable between regions.

The production of a new series of reviews in the area of biomarkers and a register of experimental methods which have been critically evaluated by several of the participants will be of great value in attempting to prioritise and optimise approaches to biomarkers.
