CREATION OF VARIETIES AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR INCREASING PRODUCTION AND UTILISATION OF HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN FROM THE WHITE LUPIN IN EUROPE

Objetivo

The ability of the white lupin to fix atmospheric nitrogen and to solubilize the mineral phosphorus makes it a very good candidate as an alternative crop for low-input and environment-friendly agriculture. The composition and quality of its grain make it an ideal candidate crop for the production of high-quality protein in Europe to substitute for considerable imports of soya, and as a potential source of new raw materials for human food industries.
The objective of this proposed project is to bring together and coordinate existing European research on various aspects of breeding production and utilisation of the white lupin in a concerted effort to develop improved varieties capable of initiating and sustaining production from lupins within the European Union, and to develop industrial technologies that will improve and increase the utilisation of their grain and its products by industry. The project partnership includes research centres in genetics, agronomy and animal science and also private breeders and feed- and food-compounding industies.
In the course of the project, new autumn-sown, genotypes that combine a determinate growth habit and dwarfism will be established and tested in a range of environments. The present level of genetic homogeneity in the F5 generations makes this readily achievable within the lifetime of the project. The more recently identified lime-tolerance character will be incorporated into spring-sown genotypes and autumn-sown, dwarf-determinate genotypes and tested in a wide range of environments during the course of the project. Appropriate technologies for gene transfer into the dwarf-determinate genotypes will be adapted from the techniques used on Lupinus angustifolius and used for transfer of a gene encoding for a sulfur-rich protein (Task 1).
The project will develop decision tools by validating and parameterising existing physiological models for the new and improved autumn-sown, dwarf-determinate genotypes of the white lupin. Use of these models will underpin the evaluation of genotype x environment interactions in the determination of the suitability of different genotypes for particular regions of Europe. They will provide the basis of decision-support systems and crop-management systems to optimise husbandry practices. A special attention will concentrate on methods for the early control of the disease using seed- and foliarly-applied fungicides (Task 2).
Technological processes to increase the utilisation of lupin grain for animal feed will be developed within the project.
Efficient enzyme complexes will be sought to increase the digestibility of the non-starch polysaccharides in the grain to increase its use for poultry feeds.
The economical sustainability of such processes on the industrial scale and their impacts on the environment (either from the technological treatments themselves or from the resultino animal mantirPR) will hP PvalilatPd
