PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF HLW-WASTE DISPOSAL IN GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS - PAGIS PROJECT PHASE 2 : CLAY OPTION.

Objective

THE ESSENTIAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PAGIS PROJECT IS AN EVALUATION OF THE CAPABILITY OF SELECTED GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS AND OF THE ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING BARRIERS TO CONFINE VITRIFIED HIGH LEVEL WASTE. DURING PHASE 1 OF PAGIS A METHODOLOGY HAS BEEN SET UP AND SCENARIOS, DATA AND MODELS HAVE BEEN SELECTED. IN PHASE 2 VARIOUS MODELS ARE COMBINED TO ENABLE REALISTIC ASSESSMENTS OF THE REPOSITORY SYSTEM PERFORMANCE. AS WELL DETERMINISTIC "BEST ESTIMATE" CALCULATIONS AS PROBABILISTIC CALCULATIONS., ALLOWING FOR SENSITIVITY AND UNCERTAINLY ANALYSES, ARE PERFORMED. FOR THE CLAY OPTION, CALCULATIONS ARE MADE FOR THE REFERENCE SITE AT MOL (BELGIUM) AND FOR THE VARIANT SITES AT HARWELL (UNITED KINGDOM) THE VAL D'ERA SITE (ITALY) WAS ALSO CONSIDERED BUT A FULL ASSESSMENT WAS NOT CARRIED OUT.

B1. PRELIMINARY BEST ESTIMATE EVALUATION OF DOSES AND RISKS TO INDIVIDUALS AND POPULATIONS.

B2. ESTIMATION OF THE PROBABILITY OF OCCURENCE FOR ALL RELEVANT SCENARIOS.

B3. DEFINITION AND SELECTION OF PARAMETERS FOR SENSITIVITY AND UNCERTAINTY ANALYSES.

B4. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS.

B5. UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS.

B6. FINAL ASSESSMENT.
