Analysis and modelling of the migration of radionuclides deposited in catchment basins of fresh water systems

Objective

The present project gave the opportunity of developing a set of models of various complexities that can be applied to a variety of environmental scenarios with goals ranging from research applications to environment management.
The main aim of the research project is the analysis of the most important phenomena concerning the migration in fresh water systems (drainage areas, rivers, lakes, reservoirs etc.) of radioactive substances deposited in catchment basins in order to develop generic models for assessment of short and long term behaviour of radionuclides in the aquatic compartments of contaminated areas.
Such models can be a valuable support in dose evaluations following an accidental release of radionuclides to the environment.
In this study the processes of the migration of radionuclides in drainage areas will be analysed and quantified.
The research will deal with the migration and the remobilization, due to the transport by rivers and by run-off/wash-off waters and to the resuspension from sediments, of deposited radionuclides in the environment.
The study will lead to generic models that can be applied extensively in the EC, subject to the appropriate local characteristics of the catchment basins. The model can be integrated into the decision support system for off-site emergency managemsnt. Therefore the Work may be done in close co-ordination with that project.
The research will be carried out by analysing catchment basins located in various European areas (Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom) showing a range of environmental characteristics and situations. The progranme will deal with water systems of economical and social importance (fishery, drinkable water, irrigation water etc.). In one of the studied catchment basins the migration of radionuclides in a major European river (the Rhine) plays an important role.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
