Reliability methods for passive safety functions

Objective

The functions of the passive B systems are based on thermal-hydraulic (T-H) principles, which are not currently considered to be subject to any kind of failure. But due to the environment and to the physical phenomena that may deviate from expectation, the passive system may fail to meet its required passive function. The quantification of the T-H unreliability is often still a difficult process due to the numerous uncertainties.

The methodology that we propose to develop will bring answers to the following problems:
- Identification and quantification of the sources of uncertainties and determination of the important vanables,
- Propagation of the uncertainties through a T-H model and reliability assessment of the T-H passive system,
- Introduction of passive system unreliability in the accident sequence analysis.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
