Objectif
The proposal addresses the scaling issue, e.g. the transfer of results from experiments to real reactor conditions in a systematic and reliable way. Anet work of European experts will summarise the theoretical basis for scaling and scrutinize applications; strengths, weaknesses, common features of the available studies and methods, and their applicability to an extended set of reactor technology and safety problems will be investigated. The scaling methods will be applied to a variety of containment-related thermal-hydraulic and material behaviour experiments (conducted mainly in previous Euratom projects. The objectives include: the preparation of a report documenting this valuable experience and case studies of scaling analyses as reference for future applications; the assessment of the need, potential and benefits of a Scaling Handbook for nuclear reactor technology.
The proposal addresses the problem how results from experiments can be transferred to real reactor conditions in a systematic and reliable way. A network of European experts shall apply scaling methods to a variety of containment-related thermal-hydraulic and material behaviour experiments.
Objectives are:
- Identify applicability and requirements of existing scaling theory;
- Document example cases of scaling analysis as reference for future applications;
- Find out common features and rules of scaling analyses in different application fields;
- Identify the significance of scaling for experiments and modelling;
- Assess the needs, potentials and benefits of a Scaling Handbook in nuclear reactor technology.
The result of the work shall be a report that can be used as reference and guidance for future scaling applications by nuclear engineers. Case studies are related to operational safety of existing installations, to plant life extension and management, and innovative reactor concepts.
