Homeomorphisms of the punctured disc and the conjugacy problem in the braid group

Objective

This proposal entails the continuation of my Ph.D project (supported by a 24-month HCM fellowship Nr ERB4001GT921592), at the U.Paul Sabatier, Toulouse. The goal of this project is the construction of a new algorithm to solve the conjugacy problem in Artin's braid group Bn. The innovative aspects of the proposed solution are the use of techniques of low dimensional topology instead of purely group theoretical methods and the fact that this algorithm has polynomial complexity in the number of strands of a braid. The fundamental idea is to interpret each element of Bn as a homeomorphism of a surface with boundary and to apply the Nielsen-Thurston classification theorem to this homeomorphism. The information thus obtained is translated back into group theoretical terms to solve the conjugacy problem in Bn. Substantial results already obtained promise a successful termination of the project within the next 12 months.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
