Objective
Organic compounds of metals (M) are of seminal importance, as reagents catalysts. The current most extensively studied are those in which M is one of the 14 lanthanides. Leaders include powerful USA and Japanese groups; in the EU, Lappert's group is prominent.
Despite serious efforts, oxidation states other than +3 for such compounds are restricted to +2 for Sm, Eu and Yb, and +4 for three Ce compounds; the former are valuable reducing agents (c.f. a recent Japanese monograph and an American review).
The project will make a timely contribution to one of the most competitive areas of organometallic chemistry. There are two major themes: (i) synthesis and structures of organic compounds of lanthanides in +1, +2 and +4 oxidation states, and (ii) their role as reagents and catalysts in organic chemical transformations. The results may have industrial significance as well as being of fundamental scientific importance.
