Fabrication and characterization of organic led's formed from novel polymer systems

Objective

The project is based on the fabrication and characterisation of electroluminescent devices formed from ultra-thin organic films. The characterisation of the devices involves Current- Voltage-Luminance measurements, impedance spectroscopy, transient electroluminescence, internal photoemission, electroluminescence emission spectral determination, and electroluminescence quantum efficiency measurements. In particular investigations of space charge and trapping effects in both single and multi-layer polymer devices will be undertaken with the aim of furthering the understanding of such phenomena. The materials to be studied include, beside well known electroluminesce examples such as PPV, new compounds synthesized within the host institution. These new materials will be chosen so as to optimise their suitability for emissive and transport functions. The fabrication of the devices will make use of spin coating onto ITO coated glass anodes. Comparisons will be made for a variety of cathode metals and deposition methods, such as sputtering, e-beam evaporation or thermal evaporation.
