Objective
Research objectives and content
This investigation will determine the best method to find the integrated strength of the lithosphere, common referred to as the effective elastic thickness or Te. A number of different forward and inverse modelling techniques have been applied in recent years for determining the Te for both the continents and the oceans. Discrepancie amongst the methods are particularly apparent for continental settings. This project would carry out comprehensive pilot study where estimates of Te from forward modelling will be statistically compared to those from inverse spectral techniques. The results will determine the best inverse method for large scale mapping lithospheric strength. This method will then be applied to Global data sets to re-evaluate and/or determine the structure of the continents, particularly Europe.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This request for training would expose me to an excellent research team based in Oxford with a global database Interaction with the team would greatly further my research abilities and allow transfer of acquired skills back Ireland. This proposal will result in a Global re-evaluation of lithospheric strength arising from self-consiste forward and inverse methods. The results will be interpreted in terms of its relationships with temperature, stress indicators, composition and tectonics. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
