Identification of novel nuclear receptors in cells of the vascular wall, and their relation to atherosclerotic processes

Objetivo

Research objectives and content
The hypolipidemic effects of fibrates have been shown to be mediated by members of the Peroxisome Proliferator- Activated Receptor (PPAR) transcription factor family. Recently, PPARs have been implicated in the atherosclerotic processes at the vascular wall. The objective of the proposed project is to identify additional, novel nuclear receptors, which are expressed in cells of the vascular wall and therefore potentially related to atherosclerosis. In a second time, studies will be undertaken to characterize the target genes of thus identified nuclear receptors in the different cells of the vascular wall. Identification of such receptors and insight in the regulation of, amongst others, cytokines, adhesion molecules and extracellular matrix proteins may lead new pharmacological tools to direct processes away from atherosclerosis.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant will benefit from the excellent scientific and technical knowledge of an important European research group in the field of atherosclerosis and lipid metabolism. She will have the opportunity to complete her training in biochemistry by learning different molecular biology techniques. Such additional formation, in addition to the experience of working in a foreign laboratory, will allow her to develop a career in the international scientific community.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Novel nuclear receptors involved in atherogenic processes at the vascular wall may open new avenues for the development of pharmacological tools against atherosclerosis.
