Integrated simulation and design system for civil and structural engineering

Exploitable results

The objective of the project is to create a high performance analysis and design tool for the civil and structural engineering industry, based on the latest findings of advanced, quality assured finite element solutions and parallel computing, integrated into a domain-specific computer aided design (CAD) system. This tool will met the rapidly growing requirements in these industries. Among these needs are: Innovative constructions with new materials and the interference with other engineering disciplines imply frequently performed cycles of design and analysis. Improving design by interactive, repeated structural analyses is necessary to obtain the economically best solution within the ecological constraints. Just-in-time design with frequent modifications of the structure in late states of the design phase makes a very fast simulation of structural behaviour necessary. Safe and economic design is not attainable with oversimplified mathematical or numerical models which usually lead to conventional or over-designed structures. The consortium which is performing the work consists of software-developer companies, end-users and research institutes. The prototype system under development is based on existing software, incorporates latest research results and will be tested on real-life problems in civil and structural engineering. Exploitation of the results is intended in two ways. The software companies will develop products within a range of one year after the end of the project, and the consulting companies being endusers in the consortium, will increase their market share by using the advanced tools. As the system is primarily targeted to low-cost parallel hardware, the market for a software product will primarily be small and medium sized enterprises (SME) covering more than 70% of all turnover in Europe's civil and structural engineering. It can therefore be expected that this project will be a seed for an HPCN in simulation and design. So the project will improve the competitiveness of the European civil and structural engineering industry by facilitating the access to, and taking advantage of, the emerging information technology HPCN.
The primary spin-off of the INSIDE project is an HPCN-based integrated CAD-FEA software prototype for the very fast design and analysis of engineering structures. It supports interactive optimizations of constructions and uses distributed and parallel software in workstation clusters and on low-cost parallel computers. The tool is intended for a broad market in civil and structural engineering. As the system is primarily targeted to low-cost parallel hardware, the market for a software product will primarily be SMEs covering more than 70% of all turnover in Europe's civil and structural engineering. The software tool improves the quality of analysis with advanced finite element techniques and provides interactive structural analysis capabilities. Faster hardware platforms and software implementations as well as user-friendly graphical interfaces are enabled.
