An innovative tool combines filters and classifies textual data, helping companies turn information into knowledge. Information does not always correspond to knowledge. Knowledge requires information capture, filtering, enriching and disseminating. Every day, huge volumes of information are exchanged but all too often we experience "information overload" because there are not suitable tools to organise the information. This means information does not get processed quickly enough and its knowledge potential is lost. The Text Retrieval and Enrichment for Vital Information (TREVI) toolkit can filter textual information and classify data as it arrives. It also enriches the information by linking it to relevant background information according to the user needs and interests. This is possible because TREVI combines state-of-the-art linguistic tools with the latest innovations in electronic publishing and information gathering and filtering. Textual information is distributed far and wide via the Internet and the World Wide Web and through proprietary networks and subscription networks. It is increasingly difficult to wade through the sea of information to find the specific knowledge needed to complete a task. This is especially true in SMEs which do not have the resources of large organisations. TREVI can analyse texts for specific information within texts and then categorise them. With user profiles, texts can automatically be linked to related background sources. TREVI will contribute to establishing a European Information Society and it will increase the competitiveness of the European software industry by developing advanced solutions with a potentially world-wide customer base. The toolkit will be easy to adapt and customise and this will make it appeal to both information providers, large corporations and SMEs. Because TREVI is easy to implement and manage, companies will be able to move information internally without having to worry about external service providers having access to confidential data.
