Probabilistic approach for predicting life cycle costs and performance of buildings and civil infrastructure

Objective

The construction industry is a major consumer of natural resources. The inability to predict performance reliably can result in waste or costly premature deterioration. Life cycle analysis enables the life cycle cost and performance, LCCP, to be optimised. The aim is to develop a LCCP based design approach, using probabilistic analysis to account for uncertainties in modelling and performance, and to define risk. This will be achieved by development of current LCC approaches, collection of performance and cost data across Europe and the development of predictive performance and cost models. The design process will be mapped using case studies, to determine how LCCP can be incorporated most effectively. The approach will include the assessment of environmental and other socio-economic factors that are currently difficult to quantify. The output will be a software package for design and for monitoring and feedback of data.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
