Objectif
A new regulatory approach is about to be introduced by the International Maritime Organisation and particular emphasis is put on fire protection design. According to the new IMO approach, an alternative design not strictly complying with the existing prescriptive fire safety regulations may still be accepted provided that, as a result of a Fire Risk Analysis (FRA), the proposed design can be shown to be at least as safe as the design made in accordance with the new IMO rules. In February 2000, a guideline for applying FRA to alternative ship design will be included in the international safety regulations with a view to entering into force in the Year 2002. The aim of the SAFETY FIRST project is to ensure that a tried and tested " toolkit" for carrying out fire risk assessment for ships is available by the Year 2002, so that European shipyards and owners can take immediate advantage of the new regulations.
