Self assembled nanoparticles and nanopatterned arrays for high density magnetorecording

Objective

The project aims at the development of advanced magnetic media for ultra-high density magneto recording (above 200 Gbits/in²) using low-cost, environmentary friendly processes such as self assembling and advanced and new nanotechnologies. The final goal is the fabrication of prototype hard disks, the evaluation of their performances and their industrial exploitation.
This will be pursued through
a) the preparation of high-coercive magnetic materials (Fe,Co)(Cr)(Pt,Pd) suitable to ensure reliable performance at high density (film deposition by sputtering, PLD and spin casting, chemical synthesis of self-assembled nanoparticles);
b) the fabrication of nanostructured arrays (dot size below 30 nm) by electron beam, nanoimprint, focused ion beam lithographies and a new nanopatterning technique (magnetoelastic anisotropy nanopatterning);
c) the characterization and modeling of their magnetic properties;
d) large area films deposition and nanopatterning e) read back signal modeling and processing.
