Objective
Within the last 20 years, developments in aquaculture techniques have enabled salmon consumption to increase more than 100-fold in the EC market. At present, no reliable method exists to distinguish wild from farmed fish, nor the geographical origin of the fish, leading to real problems with mislabelling and dumping of salmon from non-approved sources.
This project aims to develop within 3 years a verified method for the authentication of the origin of salmon. The quality criteria will allow salmon from farmed and wild origins to be distinguished, as well as between the major European producing areas (Scotland, Ireland, Norway). This method will equip the relevant technical committees of the anti-fraud and fisheries directorates of the Commission with the technology to apply within the official laboratories to detect incorrect labelling or dumping of non-approved fish.
