Objetivo Linkage-disequilibrium (LD) mapping as a powerful tool for fine-mapping disease genes, the TSC have committed to produce a complete haplotype map of the human genome to enable large-scale LD mapping studies. The availability of this data set, calls for a unified tool for visualization of this haplotype data in the full genomic context, e.g. in relation to other SNPs, genes and other genomic information. No tools currently address the specific need to visualize haplotype data. This project proposes to develop tools to allow visualization and mining of haplotype data sets using Ensembl, a public genome visualization tool. All code generated, as part of this project will be contributed back to the public Ensembl project, in close collaboration with scientists at the EBI. In addition to developing tools to visualize haplotype data, we also propose to use the whole genome haplotype data set to perform a series of whole genome analyses to investigate the relationship between LD and physical and sequence-based properties of the genome. Large-scale genome analysis may be very informative, with a haplotype map as a reference it may be possible to estimate the extent of LD in a region based purely on human genome data, this ability may significantly enhance disease gene discovery. GSK bioinformatics has very substantial resources that will be fully available for use by the fellow. This includes access to modern powerful computing hardware suitable for studies of this scale. In addition to the academic and scientific aspects of this post. the fellow will have substantial personal development opportunities with full access to GSK training courses on IT skills, team working and personal development.
