SMALL HYDROPOWER PLANT IN THE VELLA MONASTERY

Objetivo

The aim of this project is to demonstrate that, by using modern technology and along with the appropriate planning it is possible to generate energy with acceptable economic results, from springs which are used to cover various needs, in a way that both, the acquiescence of all the parties involved on the one hand and the environmental protection on the other, are guaranteed.
This project will also help so that technology and know-how are transferred towards Greek companies which are engaged in a small hydropower plant construction and it will help grow through the demonstration of the efficiency of the relevant technology.

The project is a small hydropower plant (in the place of an old plant which was constructed in the early 30's and was operating till the early 60's, in order to cover the needs of the Monastery and the nearby camp). The nominal power of the suggested project is 63 kW (133 kW more than the power of the old plant) with a head of about 23m and nominal flow of 0.36 m3/s. It is consisted of a small tank, there where the springs are, a 243 m penstock with a diameter of 0.63 m and a hydro-power house with a crossflow turbine which will be installed into the already existing building of the old plant. Innovative elements: For the water reception and the protection of the natural beauty of the springs, two places of storage of water in direct communication between them, will be created: A. a small pond of about 100 m2 and B. a forebay of about 10 m3 in order to affect the environment of the springs as less as possible.
The project will manage conflicting uses of water (irrigation, water supply, fish culture) and maximize the generation of electric power through the use of a central computer system.
The rotor is consisted of two connected rotors, as all two compartment crossflow, but with a leading pitch of the turbine blades of the one part. For the protection of the rotor from corrosion and for the best efficiency of the turbine, due to the decrease of friction, the rotor will be covered by special plating. This cover will be a mixture or epoxy resin and ceramic powder.
To avoid a leak of lubricant from the bearings to the inner parts of the turbine, there will be one more tightening ring made of Teflon, without contact of the moving parts.
The production cost is estimated to be 0.0514 ECU/kWh.
