PORTWOOD WEIR SMALL-SCALE HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT

Objective

To develop hydropower at an existing river weir using a new level-gear turbine generator, made locally. The head of 4.5 m will be increased by 1 m using an inflatable weir - the first use of such a weir in the UK.

The project will consist of an intake structure upstream of the weir; a pipeline to a small powerhouse below the weir and to one side and an innovative (for UK) propellor level-gear turbine generator producing 140 kW.
The weir will be raised by an inflatable rubber dam to provide a total head of 5.5 m.
The joint sponsors of the scheme include the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and the turbine manufacturers - F. Bamford and Co.
