Constructing major earthquakes. Microearthquake rupture and green'sfunctions in the western gulf of Corinth, Greece

Objectif

Foreseen Results

The general objective of the COME project is to contribute to the hazard assessment of the western Corinth Gulf region, which was affected by the most recent damaging Greek earthquake. Also to promote, by developing and applying, an appropriate method for studying high-risk regions and synthesize expected strong ground motions using recordings of weak events which are taking place more frequently. Also to take advantage of studies of source parameters and the rupture process which are very important in investigating fault dynamics and earthquake potential.
The COME project aims towards the development of a new technique in improving focal mechanism solutions, hence understanding of seismotectonics (fault dynamics and earthquake potential) in a seismically active region, and also applying the recently developed Empirical Green's Function method, innovated by the focal mechanism study , to sum-up a strong-event record from weak ones.

In the project, the recently recorded Egion earthquake sequence (June 1995) will be used. New recordingS of seismicity in the western Corinth Gulf strengthened by a broad-band station will also be considered. With the beginning of the project, a broad-band portable station will be deployed in the region under study and its recordings will be used to test the new technique.

Although the main event has been already analyzed in terms of its focal mechanism solution, the aftershocks have not. Consequently there is a dataset containing a unique key to the seismotectonics of the western Gulf of Corinth, and simultaneously a key to understanding strong ground motions in the regions, and thus providing a practical engineering seismology design tools for the future.

Therefore, within a framework of general objectives, two specific tasks will be addressed by the present project:

(i) to perform a detailed seismotectonic analysis of the Egion sequence, based on the seismicity, rupture property and focal mechanism study, and
(ii) to use these aftershocks for inferring Empirical Green's Functions, hence enabling the main-shock strong-motion analysis. The latter will provide a practical result of a societal and economical importance (seismic scenarios, antiseismic measures).

Programme(s)
