A participatory approach for soil and water conservation planning, integrating soil erosion modeling and land evaluation, to improve the sustainabi lity of land use on the Loess Plateau in Northern China

Objectif

The aim of the research is to develop alternative land use and conservation strategies on the Loess Plateau in China, using a participatory planning method which integrates both soil erosion modeling and land evaluation techniques. Motive is that soil erosion is the major cause of degradation of agricultural and non agricultural land on the Loess Plateau in the northern provinces of China, inhibiting sustainable use of the land resources. A new participatory planning method, which integrates both soil erosion modeling and land evaluation, will be used. Prospective alternative land use and conservation measures, resulting from the land evaluation process, will be evaluated on their effects on reducing soil and water losses using a recently developed, GIS incorporated, physically-based soil erosion model. Based upon model outcome, alternative land use and conservation measures will be refined and optimized in a participatory process. In the participatory process, land users, local authorities and policy makers will be involved in order to reach an optimum situation (low soil and water losses, high sustainability) for the selected watersheds. The solutions found in this approach are expected to be supported by the different user groups in the area, which will provide a good basis for a successful implementation after conclusion of the project.
Expected Outcome

* A project summary discussing the results of all research activities undertaken within the project.
* The extended LISEM, with inclusion of a gully erosion submodel, capable to compute soil and water flows at the watershed level.
* Publications in national and international technical and scientific journals.
The key activities involve :
* Performing a land inventory in the selected watershed on the Loess Plateau in China, and field monitoring of current soil and water losses during a two-year measurement period.
* Extending a recently developed soil erosion model with a gully erosion submodel to predict soil and water losses in catchments on the Chinese Loess Plateau. For this purpose, the physically-based, GIS incorporated, soil erosion model LISEM (Limburg Soil Erosion Model) will be used.
* Validation of the extended LISEM for the selected catchment on the Loess Plateau in China.
* Execution of a land evaluation in order to define alternative land uses, and suitable soil and water conservation measures.
* Development and application of an integrated participatory conservation planning, in which alternative land uses and conservation measures, resulting from the land evaluation phase, will be evaluated quantitatively on their effects on reducing soil erosion using the extended LISEM. Depending on model outcome, alternative land uses and conservation measures will be refined in consultation with local land users, authorities and policy makers. This approach guarantees convergence to an optimum land use distribution and conservation strategy, which will be supported by all user groups involved.
* Presentation of project results to relevant national and international target groups, and definition of guidelines to achieve optimum land use and soil and water conservation strategies on the Loess Plateau in Northern China.

Programme(s)
