New Technology of Pest Management against Insect Pests of Oil Palm and Coconut Crops: Research on and Development of Selective Trapping using Synthetic Attractants

Objectif

The project aims at a sustainable improvement of the oil palm and coconut productions in the whole circum Pacific area. This will be achieved by developing a new technology of integrated pest management (IPM) : the selective, mass trapping of the major insect pests of these crops : Rhinoceros beetles (Rbs) and Palm weevils (Pws), using synthetic attractants : pheromones and plant synergists. The new alternative method of controlling these pests is based on the rational improvement of a traditional method. It is environment friendly, and can be associated with both environmental and economic positive impacts. It is expected to reduce the cost of insecticide protection against these pests by up to 50% and to save up to 2/3 replanted young palms which would be destroyed by these pests without control. Up to 30% reduction of the loss due to the red ring disease vectored by Pws in older Latin American plantations is also expected. Its selectivity (respect of non-target species) and long term reliability will lead to a considerable gain of labour (e.g. up to 30% for RB controlling in Indonesia). Its expected low cost and easy use is consistent with Development Country context. Attractants are without danger for human health and environment. Finally, a very broad range of countries concerned by related pests, particularly African and date producing countries, are expected to benefit by the results.
Expected Outcome

Expected results : the achievement of an efficient control of Red ring disease (RRD), vectored by Pws is expected in Colombia, and in the whole neotropical region, by the mass trapping of Rhynchophorus palmarum and Metamasius hemipferus. RRD is presently hardly controlled with dramatic economic losses. The mass trapping of R. bilineatus is expected to improve coconut protection in Papua New Guinea (PNG) together with the control of local Rbs, especially Scapanes australis. The achievement of an efficient and cost-effective control of the Rbs is expected in the 3 Dcs concerned in the project, and by extension in the whole coconut growing area by the mass trapping of Oryctes rhinoceros, S. australis and Strategus aloeus. A 50% decrease in the cost and in insecticide application is expected in Indonesia for 0. rhinoceros control. A new development of coconut is expected in PNG, where it has been impossible because of S. australis damage.
The project achievement relies on constant field and laboratory exchanges. Prior to any laboratory investment, attraction to insect or plant sources, will be evidenced by field experimental trapping. Such attractions will be precised by olfactometry studies in the Development Countries (Dcs). In the lab, the most recent techniques for trace volatile isolation and analysis will be used Gas Chromatography - Mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Large-sized olfactometers adapted to the insect pests and GC-Electroantennography (GC-EAG) coupling will be developed to get accurate screenings of bioactive compounds. Organic synthesis will provide with synthetic pheromones while dispensers and traps will be designed and calibrated in collaboration with industrialists to screen compound bioactivity in the field. Simplification of plant-derived mixtures will be performed according to subtractive- additive procedures. The mass trapping tools (attractants, dispensers, traps) will be optimized and developed, taking into account local economic and bioclimatic cropping conditions for a rapid use in integrated pest management.
