DEMONSTRATION OF AN ENERGY SAVING PROCESS FOR A CRUDE DISTILLATION UNIT

Objective

It is twofold :
a) Improve the energy integration of preheat train HEN (Heat Exchanger Network) of the atmospheric distillation unit heater (U-1100)
b) make this improvement possible by modifying accordingly the C.S. of furnace F-1101.
It is expected to save 15% of the energy used in the furnace F-1101 of the crude oil distillation unit U-1100 and to reduce the CO2 and SO2 effluents with the same proportion.L%

To economically improve the thermal energy recovery from the streams coming out of the Distillation tower in U-1100 and transfer it at most to the cold crude oil which has to be heated taking into account several constraints (Desalting Unit, fouling, Convection Section, etc.) and the existing complex Heat Exchanger Network (HEN), the co-contractor Belsim used up-to-date European computer softwares. As the existing HEN seems to be already a modern design it would be difficult to improve its programme without these up-to-date computer aided energy integration techniques. The retrofit studies (HEN and Convection Section) have to be matched together, during the design phase, being the decision criterion concerning the implementation or not of the results of that phase in the existing plant a rate of return of minimum 25%.
PHASE 1 DESIGN
The design phase was composed of two parts :
a) The study for the retrofit of the preheat train of U-1100 and the C.S. of F-1101. This part of the design was made by Belsim SA with collaboration of Motor Oil leading to a technologically feasible solution, whose implementation requires :
* 2 new heat exchangers.
* the modification of an existing one (new heat duty)
* the modification of the heat exchanger network's piping.
* the modification of the existing flow control system for the passes of F-1101 including new duty for 2 existing valves, 9 new FC valves and 2 new safety valves.
* the new specifications for the C.S. of F-1101 including 2 extra rows of tubes and the length reduction of their studs. b) The detailed engineering study for both the preheat train and the C.S. was made by the engineering department of Motor Oil with the collaboration of Belsim giving the following results :
PAYBACK TIME CALCULATION (drs)
1 Investment cost
a) New C.S. in F-1101 : 130.000.000
b) Modification of the preheat train : 155.000.000
c) Design + Installation + Commissioning +
Monitoring + Evaluation : 146.000.000
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL 431.000.000

PHASE 2 MANUFACTURING
* The C.S. is ordered.
* Preheat train equipment (heat exchangers, control valves, instrumentation etc.) are ordered.
Phase 3 INSTALLATION
The new C.S. is already installed and operating.
Phase 4 COMMISSIONING
Tests on schedule before and after assembly and erection.
Phase 5 MONITORING/EVALUATION * Reports by international inspection companies. * Belsim has already used software tools VALI for the coding and simulation of the existing operation of F-1101 and U-1100 which will be exploited in the future for an objective monitoring and evaluation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
