Objetivo
The aim of this project is to demonstrate the technical and economical feasibility of a Cheng-cycle control system in a high quality folding boxboard producing industry in order to reach a maximum flexibility in steam and electricity production.
This first application in European industry will be designed to follow the variations in steam and power consumption, caused by the fluctuations in the production process especially in case of a web break. Therefore considerable savings of energy will be especially in case of a web break. Therefore considerable savings of energy will be reached, as well as a substantial reduction of NOx-emission, without increasing CO emission. The Eindhoven University of Technology will participate to evaluate and analyse the system and its parameters in order to even improve the performance characteristics to achieve the highest energy savings and the lowest environmental loads.
Measurements were carried out between July 1992 and April 1993. The following table summarises the actual targets achieved compared with the guaranteed values :

During May 1994 the first 500 hours of operation inspection was carried out. No problems were evident. Availability of the plant was found to be 97,5%.
Overall the project was adjudged to be very successful.
From an economic point of view there is a nett financial saving because of price advantage between electrical power from the grid vs. own produced energy minus additional operational costs. This nett saving comes to DM5,5 Mio per annum. Taking a total investment cost of DM16,3 Mio gives a simple payback of 2,99 years.
The efficiency of energy production with Cheng-cycle is greater than with the public grid; this represents an environmental improvement. There are also positive environmental impacts apart from the energy saving. Even without the use of a catalyst a susbtantial reduction of NOx, emission is possible in a Cheng-cycle installation without increasing CO emission.
Because of the absence of steamblow, a specific local advantage is achieved. Steamblow imposes severe environmental load in certain areas such as the German Ruhr.

This FIRST APPLICATION IN EUROPEAN INDUSTRY is highly innovative because it will be possible to follow the variations in steam and power consumption, caused by fluctuations in the production process, especially in case of a web break. This imbalance normally leads to a major raise of electricity costs and a large steam (energy) destruction. By introducing a control system based on the Cheng-cycle principle, this loss of energy and raise in electricity costs can be avoided. Annual savings up to 3.400 TOE are expected.
During 1992 two Cheng-cycle systems were insatlled. these, together with an existing steam boiler and turbine system, supplied both steam boiler was available to supply steam only and the public grid was available to supply electricity.
each Cheng-cyle system has three inputs that determine steam and electricity production:
Gas supply to the gas turbine
Gas supply to the burner
Amount of steam injection
For each Cheng-cycle system a given steam and electricity demand can be met by combinations of different values for the three inputs. The project involved devising the optimum strategy for supply of both steam and electricity.
