Objetivo
CD-NET is a museum and cultural heritage project which aims to enhance the static nature of CD-ROM technology and resources with dynamic updating of materials via communications networks. It will produce the effect of dynamically updating the multimedia content of CD-ROMs, as well as offering additional, network-supplied services. The CD-ROM that will be produced will already contain the most advanced multimedia information available concerning particular works of art. These will be accessed through Virtual Reality applications allowing the user to view the work of art in, apparently, its original context. The principal objective of CD-Net is, however, to enhance the static nature of the CD-ROM with the dynamic potential of networking. Thus data, both multimedia and non, will seem to be dynamically updated with new information as it becomes available. This will be done in a way that is completely transparent to the user. This effect is provided by a Network service centre (NSC) to which the user will be transparently connected over the Internet. Other services from NSC will include on-line consultancy with art experts, cultural information such as location of exhibitions, bibliographical information such as the actual location of particular works of art and multi-language support. CD-NET will make extensive use of existing standards and proven technology. In particular the practices defined by the Museum Documentation Association will be the basis of the storage and retrieval mechanisms used to implement it. Other established standards such as those in common use on the Internet (TCP/IP, HTTP, Java) will be used to allow transparent network access.
